Short answer
Local Services Ads are the Google-screened listings at the very top of searches like "tow truck near me." You pay when a driver calls or messages you, not when they click. In 2026 Google began moving them into Google Ads, started billing for some missed calls, and now credits bad leads on its own. US Tow Marketing sets up and runs LSA for Alliance members so the leads you pay for turn into hooked cars.
What Local Services Ads are
LSA is a Google ad product for local service businesses. Your listing shows your company name, star rating, review count, hours and a call button. On many emergency searches it sits above the text ads and the map results, and it also shows in Google Maps.
It fits towing because towing searches happen on a phone, by someone who needs help now and calls the first company that looks legitimate.
- You pay per lead. A qualifying call, message or booking. Clicks and views are free.
- You must pass screening. Google checks your business, insurance and licenses first.
- There are no keywords. Google matches you to searches from your service categories, service area and hours.
What changed in 2026
Three changes matter for every towing company running LSA this year.
LSA is moving into Google Ads
Google is retiring the separate LSA dashboard. Accounts move into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns, starting with a limited group of US advertisers in August 2026, more US accounts later in 2026, and the rest in 2027. You get 14 days notice. Weekly budgets become daily budgets, manual bidding ends, and historical reports do not transfer, so export them before your date.
Missed calls can be billed
Since October 1, 2026, a missed call during your listed business hours can be charged once the caller stays on the line about 20 seconds. If you list 24/7 hours, a 3 a.m. call your driver cannot pick up is now money spent and a job lost. Answer every call, or put an AI receptionist on the line.
No more manual disputes
Google ended manual lead disputes in 2024. It now reviews every lead and credits the invalid ones itself, usually within days and in most cases inside 30, and it no longer credits leads just for being out of area or for a service you do not offer. Tight categories, an exact service area and honest hours are now the only defense against junk leads.
What Google checks before a towing company can run
Requirements vary by state and some apply only to select advertisers. Be ready for:
| Check | What Google may ask for |
|---|---|
| Background checks | A business check and an owner check, for select advertisers |
| Business registration | A business representative check, for select advertisers |
| Insurance | General liability, professional liability, garage keepers, cargo, and on-hook coverage with a minimum on-hook limit |
| Licenses | State business and owner licenses where your state requires them |
Google says screening takes about 3 to 4 weeks after you submit documents. Most delays come from a legal name on the insurance certificate that does not match your Google Business Profile, or an expired certificate.
How LSA decides who shows first
Google weighs your bid, your review score and review count, how quickly you answer calls and messages, your photos, and where and when the driver is searching. Missed calls count against your responsiveness, and repeated negative feedback lowers your rank. Budget helps, but it cannot buy you past a low rating or a habit of missed calls.
- Answer every call. Responsiveness affects rank, and missed calls are now billable.
- Ask for a review after every good job. Steady new reviews beat a pile of old ones. See review management.
- List only hours you can staff. Showing open and not answering hurts you twice.
- Draw a real service area. Only where your trucks can hit your promised ETA.
What it costs
Google prices leads by category and market. There is no published towing benchmark; across local service trades, trackers put the 2026 average near $53 per lead, with most trades between $25 and $150. Expect a busy metro to sit at the high end.
Judge it by cost per tow, not cost per lead. At $60 a lead and one tow from every two leads, each tow costs $120 in ads. If missed calls drop that to one in five, the same lead costs $300 a tow. The ad price did not change; your answer rate did.
Ad money goes to Google in your own account. Alliance membership and US Tow Marketing fees are separate, and the account, reviews and lead history stay yours if you stop.
Your own LSA account vs. shared leads
Lead brokers sell towing calls too. The difference is who owns the customer.
| Shared or resold leads | Your own LSA account | |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets the call | Often several companies at once | Only you |
| Who you pay | The broker, at their price | Google, at a budget you set |
| Reviews | Build the broker's brand | Build yours and raise your rank |
| If you stop | Nothing carries over | You keep the account and history |
How the Alliance runs it
- Check fit
Confirm LSA is live for towing in your market and the lead volume fits your truck count.
- Prepare screening
Gather insurance certificates and licenses that match your Google Business Profile exactly.
- Set up the profile
Categories, service area and hours set to the work you actually do.
- Cover the phones
Make sure every call in your listed hours is answered, by dispatch or US Tow AI Connect.
- Handle the migration
Export history, then check daily budget, Target CPA, schedule and call routing after the move.
- Report cost per tow
Leads, answered calls and dispatched jobs, not just what Google billed.
Local Services Ads: frequently asked questions
Is LSA the same as Google Ads?
No, though they are merging. Google Ads charge per click and use keywords. LSA charges per lead, needs screening and has no keywords. In 2026 LSA moves into the Google Ads platform but stays pay-per-lead.
Will I be charged for calls I miss?
Often, yes. Since October 1, 2026, a missed call during your listed hours can be billed once the caller stays on the line about 20 seconds.
Can I dispute a bad lead?
Not by hand. Google credits invalid leads automatically, usually within days and in most cases inside 30 days.
What insurance does Google want for towing?
It may ask for general liability, professional liability, garage keepers, cargo and on-hook coverage, depending on your state.
How long does approval take?
Google says 3 to 4 weeks after you submit documents. Mismatched names cause most delays.
Do reviews affect LSA?
Yes. Review score and count are among the factors Google uses to rank LSA listings.
