Google Business Profile and Maps for towing companies

Short answer

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows in the map pack and Google Maps when someone searches for a tow. For most towing companies it brings more calls than the website. Getting it right means the correct category, a real service area, honest hours, steady reviews and staying inside Google's rules so you are not suspended. US Tow Marketing sets up and manages profiles for Alliance members.

Why the Google Business Profile matters most in towing

A driver with a dead car does not research. They search, see three companies on a map with stars and a call button, and tap one. That map pack runs on Business Profiles. Whitespark's 2026 survey of local search experts ranks the primary profile category and distance to the searcher as the two strongest map-pack factors.

Google says local results weigh relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay for a better local rank. Everything below is about those three. For the website side, see towing SEO.

Which Google Business Profile category should a towing company use?

Google tells businesses to use as few categories as possible and to pick the most specific one that finishes the sentence "This business is a." For a tow company the primary category is almost always Towing service. Add secondary categories only for work you really do as its own business line, such as roadside assistance. Check the exact names in the category picker; the list changes.

Do not use categories as keywords. Services like winch-outs, lockouts, flatbed towing and impound releases belong in the Services section and in your description, not as extra categories.

Setting up a service-area towing business

Most tow companies go to the customer, which makes them a service-area business. Google's rules for that setup are specific:

  • Hide the address if customers do not come to you. If you have an impound lot or office where people pick up cars during set hours, you can show it and also set a service area.
  • Up to 20 service areas, set by city, ZIP code or similar area. Google does not allow a radius.
  • About 2 hours of driving is Google's guide for how far the overall area should reach.
  • One profile per business. Virtual offices, rented mailboxes and P.O. boxes are not eligible.
  • A phone you control, local where you can, with no redirects to other numbers.

A service area should match where your trucks can hit your promised ETA, not every town you would accept a long run to. Distance still decides who shows, and listing far-off towns does not change where Google thinks you are.

Name, hours, photos and posts

Business name

Use your real name as it appears on your trucks, signage and invoices. Google bans adding taglines, service words, locations or "24 hours" to the name. Whitespark's experts still rate keywords in the name as a strong ranking signal, which is exactly why spam listings stuff them in, and why those listings get reported and suspended.

Hours

List the hours someone will actually answer the phone. If you run 24/7 dispatch, say so, and cover the phones at night with dispatch or an AI receptionist. Set separate hours for the impound lot or release window if they differ, and add holiday hours ahead of time.

Photos

Real photos of your own trucks with your name on the doors, your yard, your drivers in uniform and real jobs. Branded equipment is also what Google asks to see during video verification, so the same habits help twice.

Posts, services and questions

Fill in every service with a short description. Use posts for real news such as a new rotator, a new town covered or storm hours. Keep the profile active and accurate; listing accuracy is increasingly how Google and AI tools decide which businesses to trust.

How do I verify a towing company on Google?

Google picks the verification method and you cannot change it. Options include phone or text, email, mail, a live video call or a recorded video. For a live video call Google asks you to show your location (signs, street signs, nearby businesses), your branded equipment or tools, and proof that you run the business, such as keys to the facility or access to staff-only areas.

For a tow company that means filming the yard sign, a lettered truck, and opening the office or gate. Have your business registration, insurance and a utility bill ready in case Google asks.

Suspensions and fake towing listings

Towing, like locksmiths, has a long-running problem with fake listings: lead generators that invent "local" companies, answer from a call center and sell the job to whoever will take it. They hurt real operators twice, by taking map spots and by making Google stricter with every towing profile.

Real companies get suspended too, usually for a mismatch Google can see: a name with extra keywords, an address that is a mailbox, a second profile for the same company, or a sudden batch of edits. Google rarely tells you the exact reason, so prevention is cheaper than reinstatement.

  • Keep one clean profile with your real name, a real address or a hidden address and a real service area.
  • Make edits slowly and keep records: registration, licenses, insurance, signage photos.
  • Report fake competitors with "Suggest an edit" on Maps, and use Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form for impersonation or fraud. Bring screenshots and evidence. Removals are slow and not guaranteed.

Reviews on your profile

Google says more reviews and better ratings can help your local rank. Whitespark's 2026 experts moved review recency up sharply, so a steady flow beats an old pile. Ask every happy customer, answer every review, and never buy or filter them. See review management for the rules.

Google Business Profile & Maps: frequently asked questions

What category should a tow company pick on Google Business Profile?

Towing service is usually the primary category. Add a secondary category only for a separate line of business you really run, such as roadside assistance. Services go in the Services section.

Should a towing company hide its address on Google?

Yes, if customers do not visit you. Google requires service-area businesses to hide the address. If people come to your lot or office during set hours, you can show it and set a service area.

How many service areas can I add?

Up to 20, set by city, ZIP code or similar area. Google does not allow a radius and says the overall area should stay within about 2 hours of driving.

Can I put "24 Hour Towing" in my business name?

No. Google bans taglines, service words, locations and hours in the name. Use your real-world name and show 24-hour service in your hours instead.

Why was my towing profile suspended?

Common causes are a keyword-stuffed name, a mailbox or virtual office address, duplicate profiles or big batches of edits. Google rarely gives the exact reason, so fix every mismatch before appealing.

How do I report a fake towing company on Google Maps?

Use Suggest an edit on the listing, and Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form for fraud or impersonation. Include screenshots and evidence. Removal is not guaranteed and can take weeks.

What does Google want to see in a video verification?

Your location, such as signs or street signs, your branded equipment, and proof you run the business, such as keys to the facility or staff-only areas.
