Local Services Ads for Towing Companies: What Changed in 2026

Google moved its pay-per-lead ads into Google Ads, started billing missed calls on October 1 and ended manual disputes. What tow operators need to change so paid leads become hooked cars.

Short answer: Local Services Ads for towing companies are the "Google Screened" listings at the top of a search like "tow truck near me." You pay when a driver calls or messages you, not when they click. In 2026 Google began moving these ads into Google Ads as a pay-per-lead Performance Max campaign, started billing for some missed calls on October 1, and now credits invalid leads on its own. LSA is still the most direct path from a stranded driver's search to your dispatch phone. It only pays off if your calls get answered and your settings match the work your trucks actually do.

What are Local Services Ads for towing companies?

LSA is a Google ad product built for local service businesses. Your listing shows your company name, star rating, review count, hours and a call button. On many emergency searches it sits above the regular text ads and above the map results, and it also shows on Google Maps.

Three things make it different from standard Google Ads:

  • You pay per lead. A lead is a qualifying phone call, message or booking. Clicks and impressions are free.
  • You must pass screening. Google checks your business, insurance and licensing before the ad can run. Passing earns the trust badge.
  • There are no keywords. Google decides when to show you based on the service categories, service area and hours you set.

That model fits towing. Most towing searches happen on a phone, by someone who needs help right now and will call the first company that looks legitimate.

What changed with Local Services Ads in 2026?

Three changes matter to a tow operator this year:

  • August 2026: LSA started moving into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max, first for a limited group of US advertisers.
  • October 1, 2026: a missed call during your stated hours can be billed once the caller stays on the line about 20 seconds.
  • Automatic credits: Google reviews leads itself and credits the ones it judges invalid. Manual disputes ended in 2024.

Is LSA moving into Google Ads?

Yes. Google is retiring the separate Local Services Ads dashboard. Accounts move into Google Ads in phases: a limited set of US advertisers from August 2026, more US accounts later in 2026, and non-US accounts and remaining categories in 2027. Account admins get notice 14 days before the move and a reminder seven days later.

The ads still show in the same places and you still pay per lead. What changes is how you manage them:

  • Budget: the old weekly average budget becomes an average daily budget.
  • Bidding: manual bidding goes away. Google sets one campaign-level Target CPA across all your categories.
  • Lead inbox: the LSA app and dashboard give way to Lead Manager inside Google Ads.
  • Reports: your lead history transfers. Historical performance reports do not.
  • Business details: your name, address and standard hours sync from your Google Business Profile. A big name or address change can trigger a 24 to 48 hour review and pause the campaign.

What to do now: export your LSA reports before your migration date, and make sure your Google Business Profile name, address and hours match your LSA profile exactly. After the move, check your daily budget, Target CPA, service categories, service area, ad schedule and the phone number leads ring to.

Will Google bill me for missed calls?

Starting October 1, 2026, a call that arrives during the business hours you listed can be charged as a lead even if nobody picks up, once the caller stays on the line more than about 20 seconds. If your phone menu asks callers to press a key, the timer starts after the key press.

For a towing company this is the change that matters most. If you list 24/7 hours, a call at 3 a.m. counts as business hours. A driver strapping a car down on the shoulder can't answer, and that missed call is now money spent and a job handed to the next company on the list. Before you list round-the-clock hours, make sure someone or something answers round the clock. Our guide on why missed calls are costing towing companies walks through the options.

Can I still dispute a bad lead?

No. Many older guides still tell you to dispute junk leads, but Google retired manual disputes in mid-2024. It now reviews leads itself and credits the ones it judges invalid. Trade press reports credits landing anywhere from a few days to about 30 days. Google also stopped crediting leads just because they came from outside your area or asked for a job you don't offer.

So your defense against wasted spend moved into setup. Tight service categories, an exact service area and honest hours now do the job disputes used to do. You can still rate leads in the feedback survey, which helps Google learn what a good lead looks like for you.

What does Google check before a towing company can run LSA?

Towing has its own screening list in Google's help center. Requirements vary by state and city, and Google marks most items as applying to select advertisers, but be ready for all of them:

  • Background checks: a business check and an owner check.
  • Business registration: a business check and a business representative check.
  • Insurance: general liability, professional liability, garage keepers liability, cargo liability, on-hook insurance and an on-hook limit.
  • Licenses: a state-level business license and owner license where local law requires them.

You also need a public, verified Google Business Profile. Google says screening takes 3 to 4 weeks after you submit documents. The usual delays come from paperwork that doesn't match: the legal name on your insurance certificate differs from the name on your profile, or a certificate has expired. Ask your agent for current certificates in your exact legal business name before you apply. Our Google Business Profile guide for towing companies covers getting the profile right first.

How does LSA decide which towing company shows first?

Google doesn't publish a formula. Its help pages say placement depends on your bid, your rating and number of reviews, your average response time, your photos, and the customer's location and time of search. Google also says missed calls can hurt your responsiveness, and serious or repeated negative feedback can lower your ranking.

For towing, that points to four habits:

  • Answer every call. Responsiveness affects ranking, and missed calls are now billable. Treat answering as part of the ad.
  • Ask for a review on every good job. A text with your review link sent right after drop-off works better than asking a week later. See review management.
  • Keep hours honest. List only the hours you can staff. Showing as open and then not answering hurts you twice.
  • Set a real service area. Draw it around the places your trucks can reach within the ETA you promise, not the biggest area Google will let you pick.

How much do Local Services Ads cost a towing company?

Google sets the price per lead by category and market, and after migration it is set through automated bidding toward your Target CPA. Google publishes no towing benchmark. One 2026 roundup of home and local services put the blended average near $53 per lead, with most trades between about $25 and $150 depending on city and competition. Treat that as a rough range. A busy metro will sit near the top.

Cost per lead is the wrong number to judge by on its own. What you want to know is cost per towed vehicle.

Example math (illustration only): if you pay $60 per lead and 1 in 2 leads becomes a tow, each tow costs $120 in ad spend. If only 1 in 5 leads becomes a tow because calls go unanswered or come from outside your area, the same $60 lead costs $300 per tow. The ad price didn't change. Your answer rate and settings did.

Set your budget to what your fleet can handle. Paying for more leads than you have trucks means missed calls, longer ETAs, worse reviews and a lower rank next week. For sizing the paid side as a whole, read how much a towing company should spend on Google Ads.

Should you run your own LSA account or buy shared leads?

Lead brokers sell towing calls too, and shared leads often go to several companies at once. With your own account the driver chose your listing, you pay Google directly at a budget you control, every job builds your reviews and rank, and if you pause you keep the account, reviews and lead history. When broker calls stop, nothing carries over.

How US Tow Marketing and US Tow AI Connect help with LSA

US Tow Marketing is the Alliance's lead generation engine for towing companies. It sets up and runs Local Services Ads alongside Google Business Profile, Google Ads, SEO, review generation and call tracking. That includes checking that LSA is live for towing in your market, getting your screening paperwork to match your profile, setting categories, service area and hours to the work you do, and handling the move into Google Ads. Fees are quoted to your market. See the Local Services Ads service page.

US Tow AI Connect covers the phones. It is an AI phone attendant that answers every call, takes the location, vehicle and contact details, and books the job, so a call during your listed hours doesn't turn into a billed lead nobody heard. Read more on the AI receptionist page.

LSA is one channel. For the rest, see towing SEO and how to get more towing calls. Want a second opinion on your setup first? Ask for a free growth audit or compare membership pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is LSA the same as regular Google Ads?

No, though they are merging. Regular Google Ads charge per click and use keywords. LSA charges per lead, requires screening and has no keywords. In 2026 LSA campaigns are moving into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns, and billing stays per lead.

Will I be charged for calls I miss?

Since October 1, 2026, often yes. A missed call during your listed business hours can be billed once the caller stays on the line more than about 20 seconds. If you list 24/7 hours, make sure every call gets answered.

Can I dispute a bad lead?

Not by hand. Google ended manual disputes in 2024 and now credits invalid leads automatically. Leads from outside your area or for services you don't offer are no longer credited, so set categories and service area carefully.

What insurance does Google ask towing companies for?

Google's towing list includes general liability, professional liability, garage keepers, cargo, on-hook insurance and an on-hook limit, depending on your state and account. Have current certificates in your exact legal business name before you apply.

How long does LSA approval take for towing?

Google says screening takes 3 to 4 weeks after you submit documents. Mismatched names and expired certificates cause most delays.

When will my account move into Google Ads?

Google assigns the date and gives account admins 14 days' notice. The rollout started in August 2026 with a limited group of US advertisers and runs into 2027. Export your reports first, because historical performance reports don't transfer.

Do reviews affect LSA ranking?

Yes. Google lists your rating and number of reviews among the things that affect placement, along with responsiveness and your bid. A steady flow of new reviews helps you show higher and get picked more often.
