Short answer

Google Ads for towing are the search ads that show above the map when someone types "tow truck near me." You pay per click, choose your keywords, and can show a call button. They bring calls the day they go live, and they waste money fast without tight targeting and call tracking. US Tow Marketing builds and runs Google Ads for Alliance members, measured by booked tows.

How Google Ads work for towing

You pick the searches you want to show for, write ads, set a budget and bid, and pay when someone clicks or taps to call. Unlike Local Services Ads, there is no screening and no pay-per-lead pricing. You control the keywords, the ad text, the hours and the map you show on, which also means you own the mistakes.

For towing the best searches are urgent ones: "tow truck near me," "towing [town]," "flatbed tow," "car towing on I-70." Research searches like "how to tow a car with a rope" bring clicks, not calls.

Call assets and the end of call-only ads

Google is retiring call-only ads. The option to create new ones was removed in February 2026, and existing call-only ads stop getting impressions in February 2027. The replacement is a responsive search ad with a call asset, which puts a tap-to-call button on the ad.

If any of your ad groups still run only call-only ads, add responsive search ads with call assets now so those groups keep serving and the new ads have time to learn. Turn on call reporting so Google assigns a forwarding number and you can see call length, start time and whether the call connected.

How much should a towing company spend on Google Ads?

Set the budget from the tow back to the click. You need three figures from your own books: average ticket, the share of calls that turn into dispatched jobs, and how many more jobs your trucks can take.

Here is an illustration with made-up round numbers. If a click costs $8, one in four clicks calls, and half of those calls book, each booked tow costs $64 in ads. If your average light-duty ticket clears that with room for fuel and labor, raise the budget until your trucks are full or the cost per tow climbs. If missed calls drop your booking rate to one in four, that same tow costs $128.

There is no published towing benchmark. WordStream's 2026 figures for auto repair, the closest category, put the median cost per click around $4.35 and cost per lead near $30. Treat those as rough context only; emergency towing in a big metro can run much higher.

Targeting: keywords, negatives, map and hours

Negative keywords

Negatives keep your ad off searches that will never book. Common ones for tow companies:

  • Jobs and hiring: "jobs," "driver jobs," "CDL," "salary," "hiring."
  • Equipment shoppers: "for sale," "used tow truck," "tow dolly," "tow straps," "hitch."
  • Do-it-yourself: "how to tow," "towing capacity," "towing a trailer."
  • Services you do not run, and towns outside your area.

Geo-targeting

Draw the ad map around where your trucks hit your promised ETA. Google offers "presence or interest," which also reaches people outside your area who show interest in it, and "presence," which reaches people in the area. Google recommends the broad setting; for emergency towing, where the caller has to be in your area, many operators test presence first and check the search terms report.

Ad schedule

Run ads only when someone answers. If nights are covered by dispatch or an AI receptionist, run 24/7. If not, schedule the call asset to your staffed hours and raise bids at the times your calls convert best.

Conversion tracking: count calls, not clicks

Google can count a call from an ad as a conversion once it passes a minimum length that you set. Google's own example is a business that found calls over two minutes led to sales and counted only those. For towing, look at your call details report, find the length where a real tow request starts, and set the minimum there so wrong numbers and hang-ups do not train the bidding.

Then connect calls to jobs. Call tracking and your dispatch software let you see which keywords produced booked tows, not just ringing phones.

Google Ads and Local Services Ads in 2026

Google is moving Local Services Ads into the Google Ads platform as pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns, starting with some US advertisers in August 2026 and finishing in 2027. Both will live in one account, but they still work differently: Google Ads charge per click on keywords you choose, while LSA charges per lead and needs Google screening.

Most towing companies do best running both, with separate budgets and reporting so you can see which one books tows cheaper in each town. If you want a second opinion on an account you run today, ask for a free growth audit.

How the Alliance runs it

  1. Set the math

Average ticket, booking rate and truck capacity give the target cost per tow.

  2. Build tight campaigns

Urgent towing keywords, a negative list, and an ad map inside your ETA.

  3. Add call assets

Responsive search ads with call assets and call reporting on.

  4. Track real calls

A minimum call length that matches a real tow request.

  5. Match the schedule

Ads run only when dispatch or US Tow AI Connect answers.

  6. Tune weekly

Search terms, negatives, bids and cost per booked tow by town.

Google Ads: frequently asked questions

Are Google Ads worth it for a tow company?

They can be when the cost per booked tow is below what a tow earns after fuel and labor. Measure booked jobs from ad calls, not clicks, to know.

Can I still run call-only ads?

Not new ones. Google removed the option to create call-only ads in February 2026, and existing ones stop serving in February 2027. Use responsive search ads with call assets instead.

What is the difference between Google Ads and Local Services Ads?

Google Ads charge per click on keywords you choose. Local Services Ads charge per lead, need Google screening and have no keywords. LSA is moving into the Google Ads platform during 2026 and 2027.

What negative keywords should a towing company use?

Start with job and hiring terms, equipment-for-sale terms, do-it-yourself towing terms, services you do not offer and towns outside your area. Add more from the search terms report every week.

How do I track calls from Google Ads?

Turn on call reporting on your call assets and set a minimum call length for a conversion. Pick the length where a real tow request starts, based on your call details report.

Should my towing ads run 24/7?

Only if someone answers 24/7. Schedule ads to the hours dispatch or an AI receptionist covers, because a paid click to an unanswered phone is a lost job.
