Missed Calls Are Costing Towing Companies More in 2026

Unanswered calls lose jobs, reviews and ad money, and since October 1 Google can bill LSA advertisers for them. How to measure your answer rate and cover every hour you advertise.

Short answer: missed calls are costing towing companies jobs, reviews, ad money and ranking. A stranded driver who doesn't get an answer calls the next number on the screen. Since October 1, 2026, Google can also bill Local Services Ads advertisers for missed calls during their listed hours, and Google says missed calls can hurt LSA responsiveness. The fix is to measure your answer rate, cover every hour you advertise, and put overflow and after-hours calls in front of a person or an AI receptionist that takes the job.

What does a missed towing call cost?

A missed call is a lost job at your average ticket, plus whatever you paid to make the phone ring. Do the math with your own numbers.

Example math (illustration only): say your shop misses 5 calls a week that would have booked, and your average light-duty ticket is $200. That is $1,000 a week, or about $52,000 a year, in jobs that went to someone else. If those calls came from ads, add the ad cost on top.

The hidden cost is worse. The driver you didn't answer may leave a one-star review for "no answer," and in Local Services Ads your responsiveness affects where you show next week. One missed call can cost you the next five.

How does LSA bill missed calls starting October 1, 2026?

Google told Local Services advertisers it is changing how call leads are charged. Starting October 1, 2026, a missed call placed during your business hours can be charged once the caller stays on the line more than about 20 seconds. If your phone tree asks callers to press a key, the timer starts after the key press, and calls where nobody presses a key aren't charged.

For towing this lands hard. Many operators list 24-hour service. That makes 2 a.m. part of your business hours, and a driver alone on a highway shoulder can't take a call while he's strapping down a car. Under the new rule, that unanswered ring can be a billed lead and a job lost in the same moment.

Google's LSA help page also says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, which is part of how Google ranks you. Our Local Services Ads guide covers the rest of the 2026 changes.

Why do towing companies miss calls?

  • The driver is the dispatcher. In a small shop, the person on the hook is also the person with the phone.
  • Nights and weekends. Calls come in when the office is closed.
  • Rush periods. Storms, ice and rush-hour wrecks bring calls in bunches, and one line can only take one at a time.
  • Phone trees. A long menu loses callers who are standing next to traffic.
  • Forwarding gaps. Calls forwarded to a cell phone in a dead zone ring out.

How do you measure your towing answer rate?

You can't fix what you don't count. Answer rate is answered calls divided by total calls, by hour of the day.

  • Use call tracking. A tracking number on each ad and listing records every call, answered or not. See call tracking.
  • Check Google's call details report. Google Ads call reporting shows each call's status, missed or received, its duration and the caller's area code. Caller numbers are available for most calls longer than 15 seconds.
  • Check your phone system logs. Most business phone services report missed and abandoned calls.
  • Break it out by hour. A shop might answer nearly every call at 10 a.m. and miss half of them at 10 p.m. The hour tells you where to put coverage.
  • Call back fast. A missed call returned within a minute or two still has a chance. One returned in an hour usually doesn't.

Set a goal, track it weekly, and match ad schedules and listed hours to the hours you can actually answer.

How can a towing company cover calls after hours?

You have four choices, and many shops mix them:

  1. Rotate an on-call dispatcher who isn't also driving.
  2. Use a live answering service that takes details and pages the driver.
  3. Use an AI receptionist that answers instantly, any hour, as many calls at once as come in.
  4. Shorten your listed hours in Google and your ads to the hours you can staff. This cuts calls, but it stops billed missed calls and keeps your responsiveness honest.

What doesn't work is listing 24 hours and hoping the driver's cell picks up.

What can an AI receptionist do for a towing company?

US Tow AI Connect is an inbound and outbound AI phone attendant built as a 24-hour AI dispatcher sales team. It answers every call, takes the location, vehicle and contact details, and books the job. It can also make outbound calls. That means the 3 a.m. caller gets an answer on the first ring, the details reach your driver, and you aren't paying Google for a ring nobody heard. See the AI receptionist page.

Pair it with dispatch software so the booked job lands in front of a driver fast. US Tow Dispatch puts jobs and drivers on one live map, sends the customer a tracking link, and lets drivers take photos and voice notes in the app.

Should you advertise 24-hour towing if you can't answer?

No. Every hour you list is an hour Google expects you to answer. If you advertise 24-hour service, staff it or cover it. If you can't, schedule ads and listed hours to match, and add hours as your coverage grows. This also protects your reviews, since "said 24 hours, nobody answered" is one of the most damaging things a customer can write about a tow company.

The budget side matters too. Read how much a towing company should spend on Google Ads, because a missed call raises your cost per booked tow without raising your click price.

Where does call answering fit in the bigger plan?

Every marketing dollar ends at the phone. Google Business Profile work, towing SEO, LSA and search ads all produce rings. Answer rate decides how many become jobs. Read how to get more towing calls for the full playbook.

US Tow Marketing sets up call tracking with your ads and listings, so you can see missed calls by source and by hour. Fees are quoted to your market. For a review of your current call handling and ad schedules, request a free growth audit or see membership pricing. Operators who run roadside assistance or independent towing companies with a small crew get the most from closing this gap.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google charge for missed calls on Local Services Ads?

Since October 1, 2026, Google can charge for a missed call during your listed business hours once the caller stays on the line more than about 20 seconds. If a phone menu requires a key press, the timer starts after the press.

Do missed calls hurt my Local Services Ads ranking?

Google's help page says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, which is one of the things it weighs when deciding where your ad shows.

What is a good answer rate for a towing company?

Aim to answer every call during the hours you advertise. Measure by hour of day so you can see when calls slip and add coverage there.

How do I see which calls I missed?

Use call tracking numbers on your ads and listings, check Google Ads call details, which mark each call as missed or received, and pull your phone system's missed call log.

Can an AI receptionist take towing calls?

Yes. US Tow AI Connect answers every call, takes the location, vehicle and contact details, books the job, and can make outbound calls, at any hour.

Should I list 24-hour service on Google?

Only if someone or something answers every call around the clock. Otherwise list the hours you can staff, because missed calls during listed hours can now be billed.
