Short answer: a Google Business Profile for a towing company is the free listing that shows in Google Maps and the map pack when someone searches for a tow. To rank it, use your real business name, pick the category that matches your main work, set a service area you can actually reach, hide your address if customers don't come to you, keep hours honest, add real photos and collect reviews on every job. Towing is a high-fraud category on Google, so expect tougher verification and keep everything on the profile matching your paperwork.
How do you set up a Google Business Profile for a towing company?
- Claim or create the profile at Google Business Profile with an email you control long term. Don't let a marketing vendor own it.
- Enter your real business name exactly as it appears on your trucks, signage and registration.
- Choose your primary category. For most operators that is "Towing service."
- Decide on address or service area. If customers come to your yard to pay or pick up a car, show the address. If you only go to them, hide it and list a service area.
- Add phone, website and hours. Use the number your dispatch answers.
- Verify. Google may ask for a video. More on that below.
- Fill in services, a description and photos before you ask for your first review.
Which Google Business Profile categories should a towing company use?
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey ranked primary category as the top factor for map results, so get this one right. Pick the category that best describes the work most of your calls are for. Add secondary categories only for services you actually run every day, such as roadside assistance. Read each category's name carefully before you add it. Some that sound close describe different businesses, such as salvage yards, and a mismatched category can pull in the wrong calls or draw a review.
Then list your services inside the profile: light-duty towing, flatbed, heavy-duty, winch-outs, lockouts, jump starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, accident recovery, private property impound. That gives Google more to match against what people search.
What are Google's service-area rules for towing companies?
Google's guidelines for representing your business are clear on a few points:
- A service-area business should have one profile for its central office or base, with a service area.
- If customers don't visit your location, you should hide your address.
- A hybrid business that both receives customers and goes out to them can show its address and set a service area, but the location must be staffed and open to customers during the hours you list.
- The overall service area shouldn't extend farther than about two hours of driving time from your base, though Google allows larger areas for some businesses.
- A rented mailing address where you don't operate, a virtual office, isn't eligible. Neither are P.O. boxes.
For towing, draw the service area around where your trucks can arrive within the ETA you promise. A tight, honest area matches the calls you can run.
Why do towing Google Business Profiles get suspended?
Google treats towing as a high-risk category for good reason. In March 2025 Google said it had found and removed more than 10,000 illegitimate listings, and told CBS News the scams cluster in "duress verticals," urgent services like locksmiths and towing. Tactics included fake listings for businesses that didn't exist, calls intercepted and routed to lead sellers, and prices raised once the truck arrived. Google said it removed or blocked about 12 million fake business profiles in 2023. We wrote about the problem in the towing industry has a fraud problem.
Honest operators get caught in the net too. Common triggers named in Google's guidelines include:
- Extra words in the business name. Google says adding taglines, service descriptions, locations or phone numbers to the name isn't permitted and can lead to suspension.
- A virtual office or mailbox address.
- A shown address that isn't staffed during listed hours.
- Lead generation profiles. Google says lead generation agents aren't eligible for a Business Profile.
If you're suspended, fix the cause first, then appeal with documents that match the profile name.
How does Google verify a towing company's profile?
Google often asks service-area businesses for a video. Its help page says the recording must be at least 30 seconds, unedited and done in one take from your phone through the profile. For a service-area business the video should show where you operate (street signs or landmarks at your base), the tools and equipment you use, and proof you manage the business, such as opening a business-only asset or showing a permit, invoice or utility bill in the profile's name. Google says review can take up to five business days.
For a tow company, plan the shot: start at the street sign, walk to the yard, show a wrecker or rollback with your name on the door, open the truck or the office, and finish on a document with your business name.
What photos and posts help a towing profile?
Use your own photos. Show your trucks with your name on them, your yard, your drivers in uniform, and real jobs on the hook. Skip stock photos of trucks you don't own.
Posts are short updates on the profile. Use them for real news: a new rotator, a service area added, winter roadside tips, a community event. They give a searching driver more reason to trust you and keep the profile active.
Answer the questions people leave on your profile, and reply to every review. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 80% of consumers say they're likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews, and 50% are put off by generic, templated replies. Write each reply in your own words.
How does the profile connect to Local Services Ads?
Local Services Ads require a public, verified Business Profile, and as LSA moves into Google Ads in 2026, your name, address and standard hours sync from the profile. A big name or address change can pause your ads for a 24 to 48 hour review. Keep the profile and the ad account in step. See Local Services Ads for towing companies.
Who can manage a towing company's Google Business Profile?
US Tow Marketing manages Google Business Profiles for towing companies alongside SEO, ads, review generation and call tracking, with fees quoted to your market. See the Google Business Profile service page and review management. Read towing SEO for how the profile fits with your website, and how to get more towing calls for the whole plan. A top ranking only pays if the phone gets answered, so see why missed calls cost towing companies, and when you add paid ads, how much to spend on Google Ads.

Frequently asked questions
What category should a towing company use on Google?
Use the category that matches most of your calls, usually "Towing service," as the primary. Add secondary categories only for services you run every day.
Should a towing company hide its address on Google?
Hide it if customers don't come to your location. Show it if your yard or office is staffed and open to customers during your listed hours, for example to pay fees or collect a vehicle.
How big can my towing service area be on Google?
Google's guidelines say the overall service area generally shouldn't extend beyond about two hours of driving time from your base. For towing, a smaller area that matches your ETA works better.
Can I add "Towing" or my city to my business name?
Only if it is part of your real business name on your trucks and paperwork. Google doesn't allow extra keywords, locations or taglines in the name, and doing it can get the profile suspended.
Why does Google ask towing companies for a verification video?
Towing is a category where fake listings are common, so Google often asks for proof. The video must be at least 30 seconds, unedited, and show your location, your equipment and proof you run the business.
Can my marketing company own my Google profile?
They can manage it, but you should be the owner. Keep ownership on an account you control so you never lose the profile if you change vendors.
